Since 2004, more than 170 anglers have lost their lives on NSW rock platforms. Almost all were not wearing a lifejacket. The ocean does not give second chances — gear up, plan your fish, and respect the wash.
Good preparation starts before the berley bucket: choose a safe fishing platform first, then prepare and deploy your burley responsibly. Our forecasts support trip planning, but they do not replace checking live conditions on the day, official warnings, or your own judgement.

Reading tide, swell, period, and wind & swell direction
如何看懂潮水、湧浪、浪週期、風向與浪向
Rock fishing safety is never about wave height alone — four factors must be judged together: tide, swell height, swell period, and wind & swell direction.
磯釣安全不能只看浪高,而是要同時判斷四個因素:潮水、湧浪高度、浪週期、風向與浪向。
1. Tide
1. 潮水
The tide is the change in sea level over the day.
潮水是海面高度的變化。
Rising tide — rock gradually covered, waves reach the platform more easily, risk increases.漲潮——礁石逐漸被海水覆蓋,海浪更容易打上平台,危險增加。
Falling tide — more rock exposed, usually safer, but still watch the swell and wave sets.退潮——礁石露出較多,通常較安全,但仍須注意湧浪與浪組。
Many accidents happen on the way up to high tide, not at high tide itself.
很多意外都發生在漲潮途中,而不是滿潮。
2. Swell Height

Swell is generated by distant storms and travels hundreds or thousands of kilometres.
湧浪是由遠方風暴形成,傳播數百甚至數千公里而來的海浪。
0.8 m — usually settled.0.8 m → 通常較平穩。
1.5 m — raise your guard.1.5 m → 已需提高警覺。
2.5 m+ — most rock platforms are already very dangerous.2.5 m↑ → 多數磯場已非常危險。
The higher the swell, the greater the energy.

3. Swell Period
3. 浪週期
Period (seconds) is the time between two wave crests. Most people only read swell height and ignore period — but at the same height, a longer period carries far more energy.
1.5 m @ 7 s — lower energy, short choppy waves.1.5 m @ 7 秒——能量較小,浪較短、較碎。
1.5 m @ 15 s — much more energy, pushes far further up the rock, far more likely to produce a sneaker wave.1.5 m @ 15 秒——能量大幅增加,浪推得更遠,更容易衝上礁石,更容易出現「瘋狗浪(Sneaker Wave)」。
6–8 s — short period, low energy.6–8 秒——短週期,能量較低。
9–11 s — medium period, start paying attention.9–11 秒——中等週期,開始需要注意。
12–14 s — long period; dangerous even when the height looks small.12–14 秒——長週期,即使浪高不大,也可能非常危險。
15 s+ — very long period, high alert. Many rock accidents happen in these conditions.15 秒以上——非常長週期,高度警戒,許多岩礁事故都發生在這類海況。
NRFSA reminder: "1.5 m @ 16 s" often deserves more caution than "2.0 m @ 8 s".

Wave reach = tide + swell height + run-up, and run-up grows with period. A 1.5 m swell at 15 s on a high tide can reach further up a 3 m ledge than a 2.5 m swell at 7 s.浪到達的高度 = 潮高 + 浪高 + 爬升;週期越長,爬升越高。滿潮時 1.5 米、15 秒的長浪, 可能比 2.5 米、7 秒的短浪爬得更上 3 米高的磯台。

4. Wind & Swell Direction
4. 風向與浪向
Wind direction is where the wind blows from; swell direction is where the waves come from. Together they decide how the sea behaves at your ledge.
風向是風從哪裡吹來;浪向是海浪從哪裡過來。兩者一起決定釣點海面的真實狀況。
Onshore wind — messier seas, waves pushed harder onto the shore.迎岸風(Onshore)——海浪更亂,更容易把浪推向岸邊。
Offshore wind — the surface may look flat, but that does not mean safe: the swell underneath can still be huge.離岸風(Offshore)——海面可能較平,但不代表安全,湧浪仍可能非常巨大。
If your ledge faces straight into the swell, waves hit the rock directly.如果你的釣點正對浪向,海浪會直接衝擊礁石。
Headlands, islands or coastline can shelter a spot, so the same swell height can feel completely different.岬角、島嶼或海岸地形可以遮蔽釣點,即使同樣浪高,實際海況可能完全不同。
Read the tide — know whether the water will cover your ledge.看潮,知道海水會不會淹上來。
Read the swell — know how big the waves are.看浪,知道海浪有多高。
Read the period — know how much energy those waves carry.看週期,知道海浪有多大的能量。
Read wind and swell direction — know whether the sea will get worse and whether the swell hits your spot head-on.看風向與浪向,知道海面會否惡化,以及浪會不會直接打向你的釣位。
NRFSA reminder: there is no absolutely safe number. What matters is reading tide, swell height, period, and wind & swell direction together, then combining that with what you actually see on the ledge before you make a decision.
